The Global Imagination

Robert Gerard Pietrusko

Global manufacturing, global shipping, and global connectivity — these systems require an imagination of the world as a single, self-contained, knowable object. Humans have long held conceptions of the full earth, but over the last fifty years that imagination has shifted toward a world that is frictionless and traversable. This shift is not accidental. It is entangled with the increasingly complex tools and techniques we use to measure the planet: space images, satellite sensors, and GPS constellations have reshaped how the earth can be known, and with it, how it can be used.

This talk explores that entanglement through several data-driven, immersive media projects. These pieces examine how satellites make possible our ability to connect the world, move across it, and picture it as a unified whole. It then follows that imagination to an unexpected endpoint. When the earth is conceived as a single entity, it becomes possible to treat it as a single instrument: a planet-sized radio telescope capable of reaching millions of light years into space. Our initial desire to analyze the earth from space creates the possibility for now looking outward. Knowledge of a unified globe, in this sense, is a precondition for knowledge of the cosmos.
