主旨Theme

Europe and Asia are home to several of the world’s oldest and most influential civilizations. Around the Mediterranean basin, the civilizations of Europe and West Asia developed shared intellectual, political, and artistic traditions that shaped classical antiquity and its long afterlife. Across Asia, equally enduring cultural worlds emerged, including the artistic, philosophical, religious, and institutional traditions of India, Central Asia, and China. Over centuries they have undergone profound transformations, especially in the transition to the modern world. Understanding how ancient traditions were transmitted, adapted, and reinterpreted over time remains essential for reflecting on the cultural foundations of the present.

Architecture provides a particularly revealing lens through which these processes can be examined. Buildings and settlements do more than express cultural values; they also organize social life and transmit knowledge across generations. Architectural traditions sustain themselves by adapting to new conditions, achieving both continuity and transformation. Deep roots allowed continued growth.

Expansive routes do as well. The historical networks commonly described as theSilk Road formed one of the most significant arenas of interaction across Eurasia. Along them circulated not only goods but also religions, artistic practices, technologies, and institutional ideas. Architectural forms and building knowledge likewise traveled across regions, often undergoing local reinterpretation as they were integrated into different cultural contexts. Religious complexes, caravanserais, markets, infrastructures of movement, and administrative centers all served as spatial frameworks that facilitated exchange while sustaining local traditions. Against this long historical background, the conference also reflects on contemporary discussions surrounding the Belt and Road Initiative, considering it as an occasion to revisit deeper historical patterns of connectivity across Eurasia.

By bringing together perspectives from architectural history, anthropology, archaeology, urban studies, and related disciplines, the conference seeks to examine how built forms have sustained continuity amid cultural diversity, how architectural practices have mediated between local traditions and trans-regional civilizational ideals, and how the built environment may continue to foster dialogue and cooperation among cultures in an increasingly interconnected world.

In this light, the conference asks how roots and routes are not opposed but intertwined in the making of cultural continuity. Architecture, as both repository and medium of exchange, reveals how traditions endure through transformation. By situating these questions within broader civilizational dynamics, the conference seeks to deepen understanding of how built environments continue to shape shared yet differentiated futures across Europe and Asia.
